International Students Can Finally Come to Australia Again

January 2023 update regarding a negative covid test requirement for some travellers.

Evidence of vaccine status is not required from the 6th of July 2022.

Amazing news. Student Visa holders are allowed to come to Australia from the 15th of December 2021.

Fully vaccinated international students will not have to quarantine and will only need to present a negative covid test. Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews said:

“… travelers will need to be fully vaccinated, and they will need to present a negative PCR test taken within three days prior to their departure.”

Update (January 2023) regarding the negative test result requirement when traveling to Australia: Travellers entering Australia from China, Hong Kong, and Macau from 5 January 2023 must provide a negative covid test undertaken within a 48-hour period prior to the day of their scheduled departure for Australia.

Update (6th of July 2022) regarding the vaccine requirements in Australia: Student Visa holders and other travelers entering Australia are no longer required to provide evidence of their vaccination status. Masks are still required on flights traveling to Australia though. Don’t forget to check with your airline whether they require evidence of vaccination in order to allow you to board the plane.

Update (21st of December 2021): NSW and Victoria remove the 72-hour isolation requirement for international arrivals. International students arriving in these states only need to take a PCR test within 24 hours after arrival and self-isolate until they receive a negative test result.

Update (15th of December 2021): International students are allowed to travel to Australia from today. New South Wales, Victoria, and ACT only require fully vaccinated travelers to self-isolate for 72 hours after arriving. Queensland and South Australia require a 14-day quarantine. Northern Territory won’t require quarantine at all from the 20th of December. Western Australia is set to re-open its borders to international students from February 2022.

Update (9th of December 2021): According to the Department of Home Affairs Australia will indeed reopen its borders to international students on the 15th of December 2021:

“From 15 December 2021, fully vaccinated international students can travel to participating states and territories in Australia, quarantine-free without needing to apply for a travel exemption.”

What does it mean ‘fully vaccinated?

If you would like to apply for an Australian Student Visa, this is how the Department of Home Affairs defines full vaccination:

Australia considers you to be fully vaccinated if you have completed a course of a Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approved or recognised vaccine. This includes mixed doses. Current vaccines and dosages accepted for the purposes of travel are:

  • Two doses at least 14 days apart of:
    • AstraZeneca Vaxzevria
    • AstraZeneca Covishield
    • Pfizer/Biontech Comirnaty
    • Moderna Spikevax or Takeda
    • Sinovac Coronavac
    • Bharat Biotech Covaxin
    • Sinopharm BBIBP-CorV (for 18-60-year-olds).
  • Or one dose of:
    • Johnson & Johnson/ Janssen-Cilag COVID Vaccine.

Australian Student Visa Changes

Here are the most recent updates regarding Student Visa in Australia. Borders are still closed, but there is some good news for international students.

Update (14th of October 2021):

Australian borders will reopen soon and the first international students will return to Australia in December 2021.

Original blog article: Did you know that some students will not have to pay for their next visa application?

Australian Government is making several visa changes in order to help international students who are planning to study in Australia and those who already have their Student Visas, but their studies are impacted by the pandemic:

  • The Government will recommence granting student visas in all locations lodged outside Australia. This means when borders re-open, students will already have visas and be able to make arrangements to travel.
  • International students will be able to lodge a further student visa application free of charge if they are unable to complete their studies within their original visa validity due to COVID-19.
  • Student visa holders studying online outside Australia due to COVID-19 will be able to use that study to count towards the Australian study requirement for a post-study work visa.
  • Graduates who held a student visa will be eligible to apply for a post-study work visa outside Australia if they are unable to return due to COVID-19.
  • Additional time will be given for applicants to provide English language results where COVID-19 has disrupted access to these services.

What should you do?

These are welcomed changes, especially for those of you who already have their Student Visas. E.g. if you were on holiday in your home country when the borders got shut and you were unable to return to Australia. The real change for all new offshore applicants will be when the travel ban gets lifted.

Until then we recommend our offshore clients just enrol (for as little as $250 AUD) and wait with their visa application until the borders are re-opened. If this is your case, let us know and we can help you to find the right course. This way you don’t miss out on the current course promotions without having to pay the Student Visa fee until you are sure you can come to Australia. Schools were forced to temporarily lower their tuition fees due to the pandemic so why not take advantage of it?

Are you in Australia at the moment and your current visa (e.g. a Working Holiday Visa) is expiring soon? There are no major changes for you and you will need to apply for a new visa. Despite the current situation, most of our onshore clients usually get their Student Visas granted very quickly. Feel free to request a quote from Study Anywhere and we can help you to move to a Student Visa or to renew your current Student Visa.

New visa options for Hong Kong citizens

Australia is also starting to offer several visa options for Hongkongers because of the escalated situation between mainland China and Hong Kong. The main change for students is perhaps the longer duration of the Graduate Visa. Students from Hong Kong will now be able to get 5 years of Graduate Visa (instead of 18 or 24 months). Feel free to contact us if you are interested in studying a course eligible for the Graduate Visa.
