The cheapest courses for international students in Sydney

ELC Career College in Sydney offers an affordable and low-risk option for international students seeking the cheapest diploma course in Australia.

ELC Career College has been operating since 1985 and is rated as Evidence Level 1, making it one of the least risky international colleges. The college offers diploma courses in Business, Leadership and Management, Marketing and Communication, and Project Management for just $6,000 per year ($1,500 per term). This makes ELC Career College one of the most affordable choices for international students. With ELC in Sydney, we can customise the duration of your studies (and Student visa) based on your plans from 9 months to more than 3 years.

There are also cheaper options; however, we only recommend these to applicants from low-risk countries (e.g., Europe and North America) due to the Australian government’s risk rating system. A higher risk rating (evidence level) of a school can slow down and lower your chances of securing a student visa. If you are a European or North American student, feel free to reach out, and we can help you study in Australia for $1,350 per term ($5,400 per year).

Update (19th of August 2024): There is a new cheapest course for international students in Australia. One of our partner schools has an introductory offer for a new Certificate IV in Project Management course. Enrol now and pay only $1,250 ($5,000 per year). This versatile course will teach you how to effectively plan, manage, and execute projects and resources, as well as how to communicate effectively and lead a team. The Certificate IV in Project Management is a one-year course but can also be combined with Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses for a two- or four-year Student visa course package.

STUDENT VISA AUSTRALIA 2024: NAVIGATING RECENT CHANGES

Explore the changes coming your way as an international student in Australia. We’re here to share insights about the notable adjustments tied to the Subclass 500 (Student Visa Australia).

Important Update: Australian Student visa fee increase

As of the 1st of July 2024, the Australian government has increased the price of a Student visa application to $1,600 AUD. This new fee structure affects not only first-time applicants but also those seeking to renew their visa onshore. For students renewing their visa for the second time or more, an additional $700 Subsequent Temporary Application Charge will be applied.

Furthermore, if you are applying with a partner, the Department of Home Affairs will now charge an extra $1,190 AUD plus a credit card fee to include them in your application. This fee for including a partner has risen significantly from the previous $530 as of the same date. These changes highlight the need for prospective and current students to plan their finances accordingly when considering their study options in Australia. If this Student visa fee increase impacts your plans, consider choosing one of our affordable Student visa courses in 2024. Additionally, make sure to save on your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) with this simple tool.

Student visa Australia: New migration strategy

The Australian education landscape is evolving, and it’s crucial to stay informed. The updated Migration Strategy brings in transparent post-study pathways, allowing temporary stay and work in Australia. For some, this could open doors to permanent residency in Australia, aligning your academic journey with your career aspirations.

The exact start date for these changes remains unclear, introducing an element of uncertainty to their implementation timeline. Keep an eye on this page, as we’ll swiftly update it with more details as soon as they become clear.

March 2024 update: The following changes have now been in effect since March 23, 2024.

Genuine student requirement for an Australian Student visa

Say goodbye to the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement and say hello to the new Genuine Student test for your Student visa (Subclass 500) application. This shift should simplify the process.

The Genuine Temporary Entrant Statement (GTE Statement for a Student visa in Australia) is a document or a few sentences in which you, as a Student visa applicant, outline your reasons for studying in Australia and detail your plans after graduation.

If you enrol in your course with Study Anywhere, you can rely on free assistance with your GTE or Genuine Student test from our registered migration agent. This is to make sure your visa application will have the best chance to succeed.

March 2024 update: Find out more about the new Genuine Student requirement in our FAQs.

Higher English language requirements

In 2024, the Australian Government will raise English language requirements for both the Student visa and the Temporary Graduate visas. Be prepared for these adjustments:

  • Student visa: Instead of an IELTS score of 5.5 you will need 6.0.
  • Temporary Graduate visa: IELTS score increases from 6.0 to 6.5.
  • Students enroling in the English language courses (ELICOS): The IELTS requirement moves from 4.5 to 5.0.
  • Foundation or pathway programs: The IELTS requirement stands at 5.5.

IELTS is the most popular form of English testing but not the only option when applying for an Australian Student visa. Most of our students prefer to take a free placement test offered by our partner schools before enrolment. In many cases, you may also be completely exempted from English testing for your Student visa application – e.g. if English is your first language or if you studied in Australia before. Contact our team to get a recommendation for your particular case.

Changes to Temporary Graduate visas (Subclass 485)

Post-study work rights for Master’s by coursework students will be reduced from three to two years, and for PhD students, it will be shortened from four to three years. However, there will be no change for Bachelor’s graduates (two years).

While the application process is expected to be simplified, it’s important to note that the maximum age will be lowered to 35 years. Additionally, transferring back to a Student visa while onshore won’t be allowed.

Stay updated

Stay tuned with Study Anywhere as we help you navigate through these changes, making sure you easily understand Australia’s evolving Student visa landscape. Get Ready for Changes: Everything You Need to Know About the 2023 Student Visa Australia

International students heading to Australia, there are some updates you should be aware of before you make your way down under. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the latest changes to the Student Visa in Australia, and what you need to know to prepare.

October 2023 Update: Change in How Much Bank Balance is Required for an Australian Student Visa

The Australian government is increasing the amount of financial capacity (also known as ‘show money’) required for a Student visa application. In our FAQs, you can find out more about how this is calculated and whether you need to provide a bank statement when applying for an Australian Student visa or not. Hint: Not everyone has to show the proof upfront.

The important number is $24,505 AUD, which international students should estimate as their living costs for one year in Australia. It used to be $21,041 AUD.

The End of Full-Time Work Rights for International Students

One of the biggest changes in 2023 is the end of full-time work rights for international students, with the changes set to take effect on the 30th of June 2023. The Government is still yet to announce how many hours per fortnight this will be capped for, and if it will revert back to the pre-covid limit of 40 hours per fortnight while your course is in session. Let’s hope unrestricted working hours will stay in place at least during the term breaks as it was before. So if you’re already in Australia, enjoy your full-time work rights until the end of June and if you’re just planning to come, reach out to Study Anywhere so we can help you with an affordable course that offers the longest term breaks (up to 16 weeks per year).

Update (February 2023): The new work restriction for Student Visa holders has now been specified. From the 1st of July 2023, international students will be allowed to work 48 hours per fortnight in Australia. While this isn’t good news for most students, at least there is a 20% increase in the number of hours foreign students can work in Australia. Pre-pandemic this limit was at 40 hours per fortnight. We still expect unlimited work rights during the term breaks, however, we’re waiting for the Department of Home Affairs to confirm this.

Small Price Increase of the Student Visa in Australia Since Last Year

International students should also be aware of a recent adjustment in the cost of the Student Visa in Australia. Since July 2022, the visa fee has gone up to $650 AUD for a single applicant. Slight increase but manageable. Just keep in mind that the Department of Home Affairs will charge you more if you are applying for a Student Visa with your partner or renewing your visa onshore for the second or subsequent time.

Update (July 2023): Student visa fee in Australia is increasing again. From the 1st of July 2023, the Department of Home Affairs will charge you $710 AUD when you lodge a single student visa application.

More Affordable Study Options with Study Anywhere

In addition to the increased cost of the visa, courses for international students in Australia are also becoming more expensive. The inflation stuff, you know. However, at Study Anywhere, we can still help you find a course that will fit your budget, with options starting as low as $4,400 AUD per year.

TIP: Here are the cheapest Student Visa courses for 2024 – check them out!

Longer Duration of Graduate Visas

On the plus side, another important change for international graduates in 2023 is the longer duration of some graduate visas. The Australian Government announced the increase in the duration of post-study work rights of international students to address the skill shortages. Post-study work rights for select degrees in some areas are increased from:

COVID-19 Testing Requirements for Travel to Australia

The pandemic is not completely over yet and although the Australian borders are fully open since December 2021, new measures have been put in place for travelers entering Australia, including international students. As of 2023, people entering Australia from China, including Hong Kong and Macau, must provide a negative COVID-19 test taken within 48 hours of the day of travel. This requirement is subject to change and updates, so it’s important to stay informed of the latest developments and to plan accordingly.

Online Courses Still Available with Study Anywhere

While online course delivery to international students in Australia wasn’t allowed pre-pandemic, this has changed and the regulations became more flexible. However, many schools are slowly moving back to on-campus delivery mode. If you still prefer to take most of your classes online, or just 1-2 days per week on campus, let us know and we can help you with that.

Update (July 2023): Colleges for international students are returning back to face to face course delivery. However, up to one-third of the course can still be completed online. Contact us and we can recommend you the most flexible schools in Australia. Even one day per week timetable is possible.

The most affordable ones are usually courses at smaller private colleges. The cheapest Diploma courses in Australia start at approximately $1,250 / every three months.

Step 2: Get your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

Step 2: Get your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

Get your OSHC

As an international student in Australia, you need to have health insurance for the duration of your stay. This insurance is called Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). It’s important that you purchase OSHC before you apply for your student visa, as you’ll need to provide proof of your coverage when you apply.

There are six companies that offer OSHC, and the cost of coverage will depend on the length of your stay and the level of coverage you choose. Try OSHC Australia to compare and get the cheapest Overseas Student Health Cover. Remember, even the cheapest OSHC is eligible for a student visa in Australia.

TIP: Australian Department of Home Affairs usually grants student visas for a little longer than the actual course duration. Make sure that even if you get the cheapest OSHC for your student visa, it won’t end on the date of your course completion. Don’t make a mistake and get the correct OSHC duration as described in our FAQs.

Step 3: Prepare your student visa application

Step 3: Prepare your Student Visa application

Once you’ve enrolled in a course and obtained OSHC, you’ll be ready to start preparing your student visa application. There are a few things you’ll need to do to make sure your application is complete and accurate. Your Study Anywhere agent will guide you through this process step-by-step.

Gather the required documents for your student visa application

This is a general overview of the documents you’ll need to apply for a student visa in Australia. These may vary based on your nationality, the school you’re enroling in, and also your previous education and career history. What documents do you need to apply for the Australian student visa?

Check the Student Visa Document Checklist Tool from the Department of Home Affairs and let’s go through the main documents together. Some are the same as you’ve provided for your enrolment: your passport, previous education certificate, and proof of your English language proficiency (if required).

You will also need these:

  • Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
  • Proof of your OSHC coverage – a PDF document is fine and you can get it here almost instantly.
  • Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Statement – reasons why you’ve decided to study in Australia and what are your plans after graduation
  • Your employment, education, and travel history
  • Student visa application form – our team will give you access to an online portal where you’ll fill out your personal details and information about your health and financial situation.

TIP: Find out whether you need to submit your bank statements and how much money you need to have in your bank account. Learn the truth about the so-called “show money” in our FAQs.

Step 4: Lodge your student visa application and wait for a visa grant

Step 4: Lodge your Student Visa application and wait for a visa grant

Lodge, wait, and fly to Australia

Once you’ve gathered all the required documents and completed the visa application form, you’ll be ready to submit your application. Our migration agent will do this for you as soon as you approve it. We will also receive any communication from the Department of Home Affairs regarding your application. This means less stress for you. Especially in case the Department requests some additional information regarding your student visa application. E.g. a request to arrange a health examination.

Before we submit your application, make sure you’ve double-checked all the information and documents to ensure everything is correct according to the instructions of our migration agent.

Once we are about to lodge your visa application, we will ask you to pay the student visa application fee. This is the fee you need to pay to the Department of Home Affairs. It’s currently $650 AUD + credit card fee. The Department will charge you more if you are renewing your visa in Australia for the second or more time. Expect a higher fee also when you’re applying for your student visa with a partner. You can find more details about these student visa fees here.

After we’ve submitted your application, you’ll need to wait for a decision from the Australian government. This process can take several weeks, so be patient. If your application is approved, you’ll receive your student visa grant letter and can come to Australia.

International Students Can Finally Come to Australia Again

January 2023 update regarding a negative covid test requirement for some travellers.

Evidence of vaccine status is not required from the 6th of July 2022.

Amazing news. Student Visa holders are allowed to come to Australia from the 15th of December 2021.

Fully vaccinated international students will not have to quarantine and will only need to present a negative covid test. Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews said:

“… travelers will need to be fully vaccinated, and they will need to present a negative PCR test taken within three days prior to their departure.”

Update (January 2023) regarding the negative test result requirement when traveling to Australia: Travellers entering Australia from China, Hong Kong, and Macau from 5 January 2023 must provide a negative covid test undertaken within a 48-hour period prior to the day of their scheduled departure for Australia.

Update (6th of July 2022) regarding the vaccine requirements in Australia: Student Visa holders and other travelers entering Australia are no longer required to provide evidence of their vaccination status. Masks are still required on flights traveling to Australia though. Don’t forget to check with your airline whether they require evidence of vaccination in order to allow you to board the plane.

Update (21st of December 2021): NSW and Victoria remove the 72-hour isolation requirement for international arrivals. International students arriving in these states only need to take a PCR test within 24 hours after arrival and self-isolate until they receive a negative test result.

Update (15th of December 2021): International students are allowed to travel to Australia from today. New South Wales, Victoria, and ACT only require fully vaccinated travelers to self-isolate for 72 hours after arriving. Queensland and South Australia require a 14-day quarantine. Northern Territory won’t require quarantine at all from the 20th of December. Western Australia is set to re-open its borders to international students from February 2022.

Contact us if you would like to study in Australia or browse our affordable courses for international students here.

Update (9th of December 2021): According to the Department of Home Affairs Australia will indeed reopen its borders to international students on the 15th of December 2021:

“From 15 December 2021, fully vaccinated international students can travel to participating states and territories in Australia, quarantine-free without needing to apply for a travel exemption.”

What does it mean ‘fully vaccinated?

If you would like to apply for an Australian Student Visa, this is how the Department of Home Affairs defines full vaccination:

Australia considers you to be fully vaccinated if you have completed a course of a Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approved or recognised vaccine. This includes mixed doses. Current vaccines and dosages accepted for the purposes of travel are:

  • Two doses at least 14 days apart of:
    • AstraZeneca Vaxzevria
    • AstraZeneca Covishield
    • Pfizer/Biontech Comirnaty
    • Moderna Spikevax or Takeda
    • Sinovac Coronavac
    • Bharat Biotech Covaxin
    • Sinopharm BBIBP-CorV (for 18-60-year-olds).
  • Or one dose of:
    • Johnson & Johnson/ Janssen-Cilag COVID Vaccine.

AUSTRALIAN BORDERS WILL REOPEN IN NOVEMBER

After 18 months, the international border ban will be lifted. What does that mean for international students?

Can’t wait to travel to Australia? You could be packing soon as the country is going to lift the travel ban one month prior to the initial schedule. The reason for it is that Australia is hitting the required vaccination targets quicker than expected. Qantas will resume its international flights on the 14th of November 2021

The first states to re-open will be New South Wales and Victoria. In the first phase, only Australian citizens and permanent residents will be allowed to leave and come back to Australia.

However, there is a plan for international students to return to Australia too.

First international students will return to Australia in December 2021

The first international students will start returning to New South Wales on December 4th, 2021. This is a pilot program allowing a limited number of 250 international students to return to Australia every two weeks. These students will have to be vaccinated and undergo quarantine in purpose-built student accommodation in Sydney.

Update 12th of November 2021: Students vaccinated with a recognised Covid-19 vaccine will not have to undergo quarantine.

Update 22nd of November 2021: The long-awaited change is here. Fully vaccinated International students can come to Australia again. No quarantine is required. The borders will reopen on the 1st of December 2021.

If the pilot program succeeds, we expect that the Australian government will gradually increase the number of international students allowed to come to Australia. Our partner schools are getting ready for exceptionally large intakes in 2022.

Now is the right time to enrol

If you are thinking of coming to Australia in 2022 you should consider enroling now. There are two reasons for that:

  1. Price – once the borders are fully open, we expect that schools will end their current promotions and swiftly go back to pre-covid prices. If you choose your course for the next year now, you can save thousands of dollars.
  2. Waiting times – enrolments and Student Visa applications will likely take longer when a large number of students will be enroling and applying for Student Visas at the same time.
